Sam is a singer and rhythm guitar player. He chooses to lean in to the percussive tones that a guitar pick and steel strings make to create a sound reminiscent of bluegrass. While he loves to listen to the bluegrass canon, he has not set out to impress you with complex licks and up-tempo virtuosity. Instead, he does his best to remind you of the river, of the peril and the peacefulness, of water that flows downstream and finds its way to the sea. He grew up in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania singing in a Lutheran church. Singing along to the sounds of a pipe organ filling that sanctuary with families from his community left a lasting impression.
From a father who is proud of his Scottish roots, he was given the middle name Macaulay after his great-grandmother--a woman born of a mother from India and a Scotish father working for the East India Trading Company. After his great-grandmothers third divorce, she settled on an island that is an hour ferry ride from Point Judith, Rhode Island. It was there that she lived a life that was not bound to traditional values, where she spent her days mingling with artists, poets, and smuugglers. Iris lived on Block Island for 65 years, eventually passing at the age of 107. The time spent listening to her stories over games of Scrabble gave Sam a sense of historicity--the feeling that we are a ripple and a living legacy of the generations that have come before us. Sam has grown into a man that wants to be rooted in tradtion, but also wants to keep a poet's hand informed by the age of social media. He writes poetry before finding a melody that can serve as a vehicle. Patterns that are familiar. Songs that could weave into and out of your dreams, hand me downs in a sense. Sam sings because he wants to, because it brings him joy, because its cathartic, and above all, because it allows him to close his eyes and truly believe that there is hope.
Sam has been known to be accompanied by friends who are extraordinary musicians. With their accompaniment, Sam might put on a show that will move you. Alone, you'll need to try and listen. With eyes towards the future, he'll be on the road and headed your way
